Things to Consider When Moving into a Condo

Are you planning to move into a condo for the first time? Whether you’re downsizing or it’s your first experience with home ownership, moving into a condo is a bit different than moving into an apartment or house. Here are some things you need to consider.

Downsize Your Belongings

If you’re moving into a condo from a large home, you’ll need to adjust to a smaller space. That involves going through your things and making some difficult decisions about what to keep and what to sell or give away. Start with your large furniture, then take an inventory of your smaller things.

You can sell items online using social media markets or buy-and-sell websites. Try giving away items to friends and family or donating to charity. You can also hold a garage sale and make a few dollars.

Hire a Moving Company

Set a budget for your move and start shopping for a moving company. Consider hiring a company that offers packing services to ease the workload and ensure your valuables are delivered safely. If there’ll be a gap between your moving-out and moving-in dates, consider hiring a moving company that also offers storage services.

Use this moving checklist to keep you on track for setting up utilities, changing your address with government agencies and the many other things that come with moving.

Contact Your HOA

A big difference between renting an apartment or owning a home and living in a condo is that you'll have to work with a condo association or homeowners’ association (HOA). Condo owners pay the HOA for services like pool cleaning, snow and trash removal and landscaping.

Before your move, contact your complex’s HOA, concierge or admin office to let them know your moving date. You’ll need to ensure you have an elevator booked, if needed, and a space for the moving vehicles to park. Security staff will also need to know you’re coming. Don’t forget to measure the elevator to ensure all your large items will fit.

Additionally, set up your buzzer so you can let in movers, internet installation technicians and other contractors who need access to your new place.
